The idea for this project
came to apple growers during an open day held in 2002. Most Irish apple
growers attended this open day, and it was agreed to set up a group, with
the aim of pooling our resources, abilities and enthusiasm, and
selling the very best apples we could grow.
The growers involved in supplying the apples are David Keane, of
Cappoquin in Co. Waterford, Philip Little of Portlaw in Co.
Waterford, Derek O’Dwyer of Owning in Co. Kilkenny and
Cornelius Traas of The
Apple Farm in Cahir, Co. Tipperary. Other growers involved
in the group, but not at the moment supplying apples for sale,
are: Donnacha Donnelly of Oldtown in Co. Dublin, Simon Mosse of
Bennetsbridge in Co. Kilkenny and James O’Donoghue of
Kilsheelin in Co. Tipperary. Also of great assistance to the
group are Lorcan Bourke (Bord Bia and Group Chairman), Michael
Hennerty (UCD), Kieran Leddy (IFA), Martin Millar (Consultant)
and Harry O’Brien (Teagasc).
The Celtic Orchards offering is a red apple packed in a tray of
six fruits. The varieties vary through the season, with the
grower involved always selecting the freshest and tastiest apple
at a particular time. Among the varieties that you may find in
your Celtic Orchards pack are Red Windsor,
Red Elstar,
Jonagored
and Red Prince.
