A recent poll in The
Irish Times shows what concerns people in Ireland at present. As
is clear from the chart, the roads and transport category is not
considered important by most people, with only thirteen out of
one hundred people mentioning roads and transport as an
important issue. In fact, of the choices shown, roads and
transport is least important, falling far behind health,
inflation, jobs, the economy, crime, education, housing, and
even car insurance, as issues of importance in people's minds.
Given that the government seems preoccupied with building new
roads at the expense of using its efforts and resources to deal
with what people consider the important issues, it is no
surprise that satisfaction with the government, as expressed in
the same poll, has fallen from 61% to 28% in one year.

It can only be hoped that some sense will dawn on the government
soon, and that they will listen to the voice of the public that
elected them, because up to now they have been listening to big
business and building lobbies like IBEC and the Construction
Industry Federation who want big roads built so that their
members can pocket more huge profits.
