Open Day 2002
The Irish Apple
Growers Association, in association with Bord Glas and Teagasc
held an open day on the afternoon of September 24th , 2002.
The theme of the day was “Marketing possibilities for new
apple varieties”.
The open day included a farm tour in the orchards of Cappoquin
Estate. Our host for the afternoon was David Keane, and also
present on the day was Nicholas Dunn from the UK.
David is one of Ireland’s foremost apple growers, and his
well-managed orchards, coldstores, and state-of-the-art grading
facility were well worth a visit on their own.
Nick Dunn is managing director of Frank P. Matthews Nurseries in
Worstershire, and he shared his experiences of new varieties in
the UK.
The central focus of the orchard walk was to assess the
performance of new cultivars which David has been looking at for
the past few years, and especially to discuss the potential
markets to which these varieties will be suited. Among the
topics for discussion was early varieties to extend the
marketing season forward, late varieties that will hold firmly
in storage (and their potential to extend the market into
February and beyond), varieties for cider making and juice
production, and the potential of conventional and
disease-resistant varieties for organic production.
