Apple Variety: Red Elstar

apple blossom Elstar is a commonly grown apple in Ireland and The Netherlands, but is not so widely planted elsewhere, as it prefers cool conditions that are not common in the major apple growing areas of the World (Italy, France, USA, China etc.). Its parents are Ingrid Marie and Golden Delicious, and it was bred in Holland in 1955 and introduced in 1972. Red Elstar is a natural chimera of Elstar, with better coloured fruits that are slightly firmer. Early plantings of Red Elstar were made in Ireland from 1990 onwards, and most growers of eating apples have some due to their wonderful aromatic juicy flavour. This apple is available in the Celtic Orchard livery from the last week of October onwards.
