Red Windsor is the name
given to a number of red types of an apple called Alkmene. This
variety was raised in the 1930’s in Germany. It is related to
James Grieve, having Cox’s Orange Pippin as one parent and
Duchess of Oldenburg as the other.
Interestingly, it was not until forty years after it was bred
that it was finally released for growers to try in 1972. The
first plantings of Alkmene in Ireland were in 1984, and the
first Irish plantings of a bright red type like Red Windsor were
at The Apple Farm in 1996. Right from the beginning its been a
very popular apple, tasting like a Cox, but easier to grow in
our wet summer climate. It’s flavour has been described as
rich and aromatic and the texture as crisp and juicy. This apple
is sold under the Celtic Orchards brand from late September to
the middle of October.
